After working as a casual chef in culinary services at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), Carinne made a career pivot that she is proud to have made, one that marked the beginning of a deeply meaningful chapter in palliative care. Joining the team in 2006, she shares: “I ended up here by pure chance.”
Over the years, the team has evolved to meet the needs of the community. What started with a team of four — two part-time and two full-time — has more than doubled. With four full-time and numerous casual team members.

Carinne’s days are filled with many forms of care. A significant part of her role involves not only supporting children and families, but building deep connections. One conversation that has stayed with her was when a child once shared: “When I’m here, I’m a friend.” This moment captured the true home‑away‑from‑home feeling experienced at RNCH.
Reflecting on nearly 20 years here, Carinne says it’s this shared sense of purpose that continues to make the work so rewarding. For her, being a PSW is so much more than daily duties. “I enjoy bringing silliness into every day activities,” she says.

One of her fondest memories to date is taking part in cooking and baking competitions with the kids. “Staff would team up with children, and doctors, nurses, and managers would act as judges,” she says. “They would taste test and have to guess who made what.”
From giggly moments to deeply heartfelt experiences, Carinne shares how rewarding her career has been.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of so many kids’ and families’ journeys over the years,” she says.
It’s through the dedication of people like Carinne that Roger Neilson Children’s Hospice becomes more than a place of care; but a community for families. By cherishing every life and finding joy in meaningful moments, the team continues to create a lasting impact for children and families when they need it most.
